They are heavily influenced by the music of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Fats Waller, and many other early jazz legends. The band name ‘Sunny Side’ was influenced by the 1930 Fats Waller/Jimmy McHugh jazz standard ‘On the Sunny Side of the Street’. The band was created in 2019, and is composed of musicians that have played together in various jazz projects around New Orleans since 2017. Sunny Side provides a full New Orleans style jazz band experience with 3 part harmonies, a solid rhythm section, and an energetic vocalist and dancer. Expect to become a part of the experience as Sunny Side engages with the energy and sound of what makes New Orleans such a special city. Be prepared to dance and sing. During the 2020/2021 quarantine, Sunny Side provided a ‘Jazz in Coliseum Square Park’ series in the Lower Garden District of New Orleans. Many locals expressed much gratitude for the music during the challenging time. They continue to play regularly in Coliseum Square Park to this day. In 2021 they had a successful 3 week tour from New Orleans to New York City, to Chicago, and back, stopping at many cities and towns along the way. Sunny Side has also been playing regularly for private events and weddings since January of 2020. A young and energetic band releasing their first cassette "Doubleshot Preview" in March 1995. Then in 1996 the band released their first full recording "Come On Let's Dance" on cassette & compact disc. This recording opened many doors for the band. In September 1996, The band had disbanded for a year while members of the band went back to school and found full time jobs. After not playing for almost a year the group got back together in September 1997 releasing their 2nd recording "Everyone's Having Fun". This recording got the ball rolling once again for the band. Playing numerous jobs in NY, NJ, CT, MA, DE, OH, PA, IN, RI, NH, FL, MI, MO and as far west as Wisconsin. In fact, in 1997 the song "Everyone's having Fun" was named number one tune of the year on the Jolly ST. Nick's Polka Revolution show heard over WPHB 1260AM in Houtzdale, PA. Not only is John Stevens a polka band but they can mix up the music to fit any occasion. The John Stevens polka band has had the chance to perform at such festivals as: Pillar Polkabration (CT), Pulaski's Big Polka Celebration (WI), Polka Spree By The Sea (NJ), The Bethlehem Musikfest (PA), Polka Fireworks (PA), Polkamotion By The Ocean (MD), Posen Potato Festival(MI), IPA FESTIVAL (IL), Blocktoberfest(DC), The Cedar Polka Fest (MI), Kinde Polka Fest (MI), ST. I am a trombonist, band director, music pedagogue, composer, arranger, and producer. I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan; that is where my musical career began. Growing up, my father often told me about his early musical endeavors and exposed me to his favorite musicians. The first trombonist that he let me hear was Wayne Henderson of the Jazz Crusaders. His beautiful sound sparked an interest in my mind and desire to play the trombone. As soon as the opportunity presented itself to join the school band, I took it. My father took me to purchase my first trombone at Hewitt’s Music store and I joined the William Ruddiman Middle School band. I later attended the Detroit School of Arts before earning a Bachelor of Music in Education degree from Howard University and a Master of Music degree from Kent State University. While at Howard University, I was exposed regularly to the lectures of Donald Byrd, Grady Tate and other legendary musicians and pedagogues. It was common for jazz experts and other in demand musicians to walk into the Howard University Jazz Ensemble rehearsals. Those formative years had an indelible impact on me. Since completing my education, I have been charting the course for my own music endeavors through teaching, composing, and conducting research on diverse topics within the musical realm. In 2015, I released a single entitled Work in the Morning and in 2019 an LP entitled The Good News. As an in-demand trombonist, I have recorded and performed with various artists and ensembles. In addition to keeping a full schedule as a working musician, I serve as a certified music educator in Michigan schools while pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation from the University of Michigan, also working as a graduate student instructor.
