  • Booking Tips |14thFloorMusicAndEntertainment

Booking Tips If you haven’t booked an artist event in the past, you may not realize how stressful and complex the process can be. While it seems like it should be pretty straightforward (find the artist, pay the price they’re requesting, have them show up), there’s actually a lot more that goes into an artist’s booking fees than you might think. A lot of the minute details are specific to a particular artist, but there are plenty of higher-level details that are common for every artist that you may not be taking into account. So today, we’re going to take a look at both the big-picture items and the higher-level details that you might not have considered. Read on for more information – you might be surprised by some of the things we cover. Know your event (and what you want them to do). First things first, the easiest way to get a ballpark number for an artist booking is by knowing exactly what kind of event you’re having and by setting clear expectations on what you want the artist to do while they’re there. While you might think that an artist booking only consists of a performance, there are plenty of other options available to you (depending on your budget). For example, if you don’t have the budget for a full performance from an artist, you can try and book them for a hosting or walkthrough agreement. These tend to cost less than a performance because less is expected of the artist. A hosting agreement just involves hanging out at the event or venue for a specified amount of time and interacting with guests. And like the name implies, a walkthrough agreement means the artist just has to show up, be seen at your event or venue, maybe take a few pictures, and then they’re free to leave. A lot of artists like the hosting and walkthrough agreements – they tend to tour for most of the year, so any night where they don’t have to perform but can still get paid is an attractive option to them. For example, Nicki Minaj got paid $260,000 by a nightclub in Las Vegas a few years ago just to sit at a table in the club’s VIP section. It was a great deal for both parties; Nicki got paid to hang out at a club, and the venue brought in a ton of business from people looking to hang out with a celebrity. [Editor’s note: This is an extreme example of how a big-budget venue applies this strategy. Savvy operators with smaller budgets can do the same thing with careful planning and scaled-down execution.] The booking fee isn’t your only cost. One common mistake that people make is in assuming that the fee for booking an artist is the all-in cost. In almost all cases, the artist’s fee is strictly for them to show up and do what you’re asking them to do. There are separate costs that you’ll incur, and if you’re not careful, they can add up pretty quickly. For instance, you’ll also have to spend money to cover the cost of all the requirements specified in their contract rider, the cost of the artist’s travel and hotel (and the group they’re traveling with – artists don’t travel alone), the cost of any equipment they might need, the cost of transportation to and from your event or venue, and any food or drinks the artist and their group will need while they’re in town. A lot of bookers tend to overlook these costs or assume that they’re baked into the artist’s appearance fee, only to get a nasty surprise when they realize they have to pay extra money that they didn’t budget for. In some rare cases, you can try and include these costs in the artist’s appearance fee during the negotiation process (more on that in a minute), but don’t count on being able to do that. When you’re booking the artist makes a difference. An artist’s booking fee can also depend on when you want them to appear at your event or venue. Artists often charge more for weekend and holiday bookings, while weekday bookings are a little less expensive. And if the artist isn’t on tour that means all those additional costs listed above (travel, hotel, etc.) could go up. Many bookers prefer to wait to book an artist until the artist is touring, and even then, they prefer to book the artist when they’ll already be in the area. You’ll still be responsible for the artist’s hotel and travel costs, but since the artist will already be in your area, it won’t be as expensive as it would be if you were flying them across the country to attend your event or venue. Of course, touring is a grueling business, so there’s still a chance that even a touring artist won’t want to add another performance to their schedule. In that case, you can consider hiring them to host, either at your event or at an afterparty at your venue. This will allow you to utilize the built-in publicity and momentum from their tour to promote your event and get more people in the door. Fees vary from artist to artist… While it might seem like artists’ booking fees are dependent on the caliber of artist you want to book, there’s actually a lot of variance from one artist to the next in terms of their cost. For example, you might think Taylor Swift and Mariah Carey would cost the same for an appearance, but their prices are probably not as similar as you’d think. One thing that makes it so hard to determine what you should pay for an artist is the fact that their fees are not public information. Sure, you can try a Google search and see what number comes up, but in all likelihood, that booking price is completely wrong. …so knowing how to negotiate is crucial. Just because an artist quotes a particular fee doesn’t necessarily mean you should pay it, nor does it mean that they expect to receive it. Knowing how to negotiate is a key way to save yourself some money, and being willing to negotiate on their fee can save you a lot of upfront costs. As with any negotiation, though, you have to know when to push and when to ease off. If you don’t, you run the risk of ensuring the artist will never consider doing a show with you again. There are a few easy ways to give yourself a leg up on the negotiation process. First, make sure never to make your first offer your best offer: set a limit for yourself based on your budget, then take 10% off of that number as an initial offer. If the artist’s agent doesn’t go for it, you can work from there, but at least you’ve given yourself some wiggle room. And second, always be willing to walk away. In order to effectively do that, you’ll need to have some backup options in mind if your first choice doesn’t go through. But showing a willingness to walk away from a negotiation gives you significant bargaining power. As mentioned above, each artist will likely have specific demands as a condition of their booking fees, so you’ll have to be prepared for those whenever you’re dealing with a particular artist’s agent. But using this information as a guide, you should now have a much clearer expectation of all the commonly overlooked details and fees that come with booking an artist, and it’ll prevent you from losing money on an artist booking.

Like 1 0 comments 0 Dana Smith OM Dash · Dec 18, 2023 A Palestinian Preaches Positive Thinking To A Tough Crowd: His Own People General Discussions by Daniel Estrin Heard On: ALL THINGS CONSIDERED Saed Karzoun read self-help books like Think and Grow Rich. He carefully studied the YouTube videos of motivational speakers like Les Brown. All of it helped Karzoun style himself as a motivational speaker hoping to inspire his fellow Palestinians. There isn't much optimism in the Palestinian territories these days. Unemployment is high. Morale is low. The peace process is frozen. Foreign aid to the Palestinians has dropped drastically in recent years. An independent Palestinian state is nowhere on the horizon. And so, this gregarious 31-year-old with curly black hair and a small goatee is encouraging Palestinians to look inward. "Let's do our best. And our best is about being a positive person. Productive. Helping others. Helping yourself," he said. On a recent morning, after the school bell rang at the Arab Evangelical Episcopal School in the city of Ramallah, high school students took their seats in rows of metal folding chairs for a special assembly with Karzoun. His talk revolved around a book he published last year, 30 Secret Numbers: The Journey of the Cosmic Rock and the Secrets of Mental Power. It tells the story of a Palestinian boy named Farhan who lives in al-Amari, a West Bank refugee camp near Ramallah. Kids bully Farhan. They call him stupid, and he's convinced he's worthless. But then he travels to different galaxies, and things change. He meets Beethoven and Steve Jobs, and collects pearls of wisdom: to follow his heart, to persevere. Karzoun says the book, a mix between Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist and the French classic The Little Prince, is about harnessing the power of one's mind. "Almost every day," Karzoun writes in the introduction, "I receive messages from young men and women asking me, 'How do I develop myself so that I can land a job with a decent salary? How do I start my own project and fulfill my dreams? To whom should I turn for guidance and support in solving my problems? Why don't I get to travel like everyone else? What are the secrets to success? What do I do and where should I start? I feel frustrated in my own country.' These recurrent questions, and many more, are essentially what urged me to write this book." 30 Secret Numbers was released in Arabic in July 2015, and sold about 1,000 copies within a month and a half, Karzoun said. Most of the sales were in West Bank bookshops, but he said he also sent 100 copies of the book to the Gaza Strip for distribution. An English translation was published this year, and a French translation is expected to be out by early 2017. The story of Farhan, the bullied main character, is the story of the author himself. Karzoun grew up going to school in the same impoverished refugee camp in the West Bank. His schoolmates used to tease him when he wouldn't throw stones at Israeli soldiers, and Karzoun was convinced he was weak. "To be weak is a very dangerous thing in your future, and for your future," Karzoun said. "You will stay weak, until you decide and to tell yourself that I'm not. I am someone who can really do something." In his twenties, Karzoun was an early adopter of YouTube, and would search the site for success stories about people who overcame bad circumstances, finding inspiration in the stories of Muhammed Ali, Michael Jordan and Martin Luther King, Jr. He was especially drawn to the passionate video lectures of Les Brown, a leading motivational speaker whose catchphrases include "It's possible" and "You have greatness within you." Like Brown, who worked hard to afford to buy a home for his adoptive mother, Karzoun did the same to help pay the mortgage on his parents' home. Karzoun is now studying the YouTube talks of inventor Elon Musk. It's hard to find similar motivational speeches in Arabic online, Karzoun said. Arabic speakers looking for self-fulfillment will more often encounter videos of Muslim clerics promising a meaningful life only through the Koran. In 2014, Karzoun founded the nonprofit group Taghyeer, Arabic for "change," which has received funding from a few international groups to help run seminars for youth that encourage activism and creative thinking through social media. He also broadcasts his message of positivity on his weekly radio show and to his Facebook following. But it's a hard sell. The economy is stagnating, the Israeli military occupation continues, and there's Palestinian political infighting. "You know what my challenge is? When I post something about positivity, always, people, they say, 'Saed, you are living in a different world. Saed, you're not from this society.' Everybody is negative," Karzoun said. After Karzoun's talk, students applauded and filed out of the auditorium, but high school senior Bisan Khouri lingered behind. She thanked Karzoun for his talk. She said she has her own share of frustrations: She and her friends are under pressure with their studies, and they have trouble finding opportunities to let off some steam. She says she feels cooped up in the West Bank, without an Israeli permit to go to the beach or travel in Israel, where she has relatives. "I learned that I should never let my negative energy control me," Khouri said. "I should always think positively, think differently. If you work hard for anything, you can change it." A school administrator said many of its students see a bright future for themselves only if they emigrate to the U.S., Canada or Europe. By inviting Karzoun to speak, the school hoped he could serve as a role model of someone who has achieved success while staying in the West Bank. Karzoun said he's been invited to meet Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas soon, and that he has some advice for the leader: Go on Palestinian radio and inspire people, he said. Tell them: Yes We Can. His focus on the personal – on bettering oneself – is different from the traditional Palestinian focus on the collective. Still, Karzoun believes it's a first step toward building a nation, even if peace with Israel seems like a distant prospect for Palestinians. "People do not believe in peace anymore," Karzoun said. "But you need to at least to have peace with yourself." Tips On Saving Money For Artists TIPS ON SAVING MONEY FOR ARTISTS Artist bookings are a great way to boost the profile of an event and take it from just another party to a star-studded affair. Depending on the celebrity, the cost of booking a celebrity can rise dramatically, and for event planners on a budget, that extra cost might not be affordable. Luckily, there are some ways you can save money on an artist booking — let’s take a look at a few options. Despite what you may think, booking a celebrity doesn’t necessarily have to mean that the celebrity does a performance at your event. There are plenty of event planners who couldn’t afford the cost of a performance, but still want the celebirty to attend. How? By working out alternative agreements with the celebrity. Here are a few you can try to lower your costs. Hosting If a performance is going to pose too much of a logistical challenge for you (especially considering all the equipment the artist will likely need to perform), you might want to try a hosting arrangement. Hosting deals require the artist to spend a significant amount of time at the event; they usually act as an emcee, and when they’re not doing that, they’ll be engaging with guests. DJing Many celebrities are looking to Djing as another option of performing at nightclubs and some prefer doing this. The celebrity is still providing entertainment, but with a DJ set, the burden isn’t on them to make sure they have a great performance and entertain the crowd. Another great thing about DJ sets is that the audience gets an inside look at the artist’s influences, since the artist will typically play songs that resonate with or inspire them. A DJ set is definitely a good alternative, and it’ll save you some money to boot. Appearance/Walkthrough If you’re really strapped for cash but think the event could use a boost from a famous guest, an appearance or walkthrough arrangement could be a great option. Making an appearance depends a lot on the specific celebrity you’re targeting, but in most cases an appearance fee requires the celebrity to hang out at your event for a set amount of time and mingle with guests. Walkthroughs are the cheapest option, and while you get what you pay for, they can be a good way to save some dough. A walkthrough is basically a much shorter version of an appearance: the celebrity will show up at the event, walk around for a little bit (typically not more than 30 minutes to an hour), then leave. In some cases, the celebrity might mingle with guests, but that’s entirely up to them. Afterparty If the artist you’re targeting isn’t willing to do a performance, you should consider hiring them to host an afterparty at another location. Since afterparties typically don’t run as long as the event itself, you’ll save a little money on the hosting cost. And as an added benefit, it will allow you to utilize the built-in publicity and momentum from their tour to promote your event and get more people in the door. Depending on the amount of effort required by the artist, some of these arrangements will be more expensive than others. But if you’re hoping to shave a few crucial dollars off your budget, these options can be great alternatives to a traditional performance agreement. Time Your Event One of the costs that tend to add up is the cost of the artist’s travel. Since artists’ contracts typically set a minimum standard for their travel and accommodations (plus the travel and accommodations of everybody who comes with them), you’ll have to spend a fair amount of money to keep them satisfied. Most artists will expect a 4- or 5-star hotel with certain amenities in the artists rider contract , so contractually, you’ll have to pay for the level of accommodations they expect as a condition of their performance. One way to save money here is to time the event. If an artist is currently on tour or about to begin a tour, take a look at the dates when they’ll be in your area and see if you can get them to add an appearance at your event on an off night. If they’re already touring, you’ll still be responsible for hotel and other travel costs, but since touring artists work their way through a particular area at a time, you’ll spend less on their travel costs. And speaking of timing… Be Flexible On Your Dates This one may be easier said than done, but if you have any flexibility on the date of your event, it’s always worth seeing if certain dates will cost less money than others. If the artist has a jam-packed schedule (or is currently touring in a different part of the country), their time is at a premium, which means you can expect to pay more for them to attend your event. Sometimes being a little flexible on the date of your event can save you a lot of money. Depending on your event, this may not be feasible, but if you do have the flexibility to shift your event, it’s worth asking the artist’s representatives if there are any dates that would cost you less money. Negotiate Their Rates Finally, always try negotiating the artist’s rate, even if the quote you received fits into your budget. This is pretty straightforward, but you’d be surprised how many event planners ignore it — sometimes planners are so relieved just to secure an artist for an event that they end up accepting whatever price the artist’s agent offers. But by doing that, not only are they potentially overspending on this event, they’re also establishing a precedent with that agent that they’ll pay whatever they’re asked to pay for all future events. For starters, when you’re reaching out to an artist’s agent, don’t make your first offer your best one; instead, set a limit on how much you can spend, then take 10% off that number and make that your first offer. That way, if the artist’s team pushes back, you’ve left yourself some room to negotiate. Also, don’t be afraid to walk away from a negotiation if it seems like you’re not going to reach an agreeable number; remember, you have a budget, and there are other artists out there. Putting on an event takes a lot of time, effort, and money. But if you use these tips, you’ll find yourself spending a lot less of all three on an event you can be proud of.

  • Jon Dietz & THE TWIN LAKES TRIO

< Polka Roster Jon Dietz & THE TWIN LAKES TRIO Polka Acts < Previous Slinger, WI, USA Next > Jon began his musical journey at the age of 8, when he began taking concertina lessons from his father Russ at home in the small town of Montgomery, Minnesota. Over the years, Jon’s dad took him along to see many of the greatest Polka bands, where their musical stylings left their impression on him. The 6 Fat Dutchmen, Karl and the Country Dutchmen, Ray Dorschner’s Rainbow Valley Dutchmen, just to name a few. The concertina playing in these bands was second to none, and Jon strove to model his playing after theirs. In his 5th grade at school Jon took up the trumpet, and in the summer before his 6th grade year, he had transitioned to the tuba. He continued with the tuba all throughout high school, performing many solo and ensemble pieces and earning top scores with each one. He auditioned into the MMEA All-State band both his Junior and Senior years, chairing in the top 3 each year. At age 14, Jon was able to save up enough money to put a down payment on his very own concertina, purchased from Cliff Hermel who owned a Radio Shack music store in St. Peter MN. In 2004, Jon moved to Southeastern Wisconsin with his wife Jenny and their son Zack. There, he began playing tuba with The Goodtime Dutchmen, and played full-time with them for several years. Jon continues to play tuba whenever his schedule allows, playing for great bands such as Barefoot Becky and The Ivanhoe Dutchmen, and Gary’s Ridgeland Dutchmen. He now resides in Slinger Wisconsin with his wife Jenny, who is the glue that keeps everything going together smoothly, and their 2 sons Zack and Xaver. Their younger son Xaver has also been learning the clarinet and hopes to join the band very soon!
