  • Tips On Saving Money For Artists | 14thFloorMusic

Great ideas on how to book live entertainment for your event. Tips On Saving Money For Artists TIPS ON SAVING MONEY FOR ARTISTS Artist bookings are a great way to boost the profile of an event and take it from just another party to a star-studded affair. Depending on the celebrity, the cost of booking a celebrity can rise dramatically, and for event planners on a budget, that extra cost might not be affordable. Luckily, there are some ways you can save money on an artist booking — let’s take a look at a few options. Despite what you may think, booking a celebrity doesn’t necessarily have to mean that the celebrity does a performance at your event. There are plenty of event planners who couldn’t afford the cost of a performance, but still want the celebirty to attend. How? By working out alternative agreements with the celebrity. Here are a few you can try to lower your costs. Hosting If a performance is going to pose too much of a logistical challenge for you (especially considering all the equipment the artist will likely need to perform), you might want to try a hosting arrangement. Hosting deals require the artist to spend a significant amount of time at the event; they usually act as an emcee, and when they’re not doing that, they’ll be engaging with guests. DJing Many celebrities are looking to Djing as another option of performing at nightclubs and some prefer doing this. The celebrity is still providing entertainment, but with a DJ set, the burden isn’t on them to make sure they have a great performance and entertain the crowd. Another great thing about DJ sets is that the audience gets an inside look at the artist’s influences, since the artist will typically play songs that resonate with or inspire them. A DJ set is definitely a good alternative, and it’ll save you some money to boot. Appearance/Walkthrough If you’re really strapped for cash but think the event could use a boost from a famous guest, an appearance or walkthrough arrangement could be a great option. Making an appearance depends a lot on the specific celebrity you’re targeting, but in most cases an appearance fee requires the celebrity to hang out at your event for a set amount of time and mingle with guests. Walkthroughs are the cheapest option, and while you get what you pay for, they can be a good way to save some dough. A walkthrough is basically a much shorter version of an appearance: the celebrity will show up at the event, walk around for a little bit (typically not more than 30 minutes to an hour), then leave. In some cases, the celebrity might mingle with guests, but that’s entirely up to them. Afterparty If the artist you’re targeting isn’t willing to do a performance, you should consider hiring them to host an afterparty at another location. Since afterparties typically don’t run as long as the event itself, you’ll save a little money on the hosting cost. And as an added benefit, it will allow you to utilize the built-in publicity and momentum from their tour to promote your event and get more people in the door. Depending on the amount of effort required by the artist, some of these arrangements will be more expensive than others. But if you’re hoping to shave a few crucial dollars off your budget, these options can be great alternatives to a traditional performance agreement. Time Your Event One of the costs that tend to add up is the cost of the artist’s travel. Since artists’ contracts typically set a minimum standard for their travel and accommodations (plus the travel and accommodations of everybody who comes with them), you’ll have to spend a fair amount of money to keep them satisfied. Most artists will expect a 4- or 5-star hotel with certain amenities in the artists rider contract , so contractually, you’ll have to pay for the level of accommodations they expect as a condition of their performance. One way to save money here is to time the event. If an artist is currently on tour or about to begin a tour, take a look at the dates when they’ll be in your area and see if you can get them to add an appearance at your event on an off night. If they’re already touring, you’ll still be responsible for hotel and other travel costs, but since touring artists work their way through a particular area at a time, you’ll spend less on their travel costs. And speaking of timing… Be Flexible On Your Dates This one may be easier said than done, but if you have any flexibility on the date of your event, it’s always worth seeing if certain dates will cost less money than others. If the artist has a jam-packed schedule (or is currently touring in a different part of the country), their time is at a premium, which means you can expect to pay more for them to attend your event. Sometimes being a little flexible on the date of your event can save you a lot of money. Depending on your event, this may not be feasible, but if you do have the flexibility to shift your event, it’s worth asking the artist’s representatives if there are any dates that would cost you less money. Negotiate Their Rates Finally, always try negotiating the artist’s rate, even if the quote you received fits into your budget. This is pretty straightforward, but you’d be surprised how many event planners ignore it — sometimes planners are so relieved just to secure an artist for an event that they end up accepting whatever price the artist’s agent offers. But by doing that, not only are they potentially overspending on this event, they’re also establishing a precedent with that agent that they’ll pay whatever they’re asked to pay for all future events. For starters, when you’re reaching out to an artist’s agent, don’t make your first offer your best one; instead, set a limit on how much you can spend, then take 10% off that number and make that your first offer. That way, if the artist’s team pushes back, you’ve left yourself some room to negotiate. Also, don’t be afraid to walk away from a negotiation if it seems like you’re not going to reach an agreeable number; remember, you have a budget, and there are other artists out there. Putting on an event takes a lot of time, effort, and money. But if you use these tips, you’ll find yourself spending a lot less of all three on an event you can be proud of.

  • Sigur Ros

Ambient Acts < Ambient Previous Next> Ambient Acts Reykjavík, Iceland Sigur Ros Book Direct: https://www.14thfloormusic.com/product-page/book-entertainment-for-sigur-ros Full Live Concert Social media posts on February 14th – Valentine’s Day – sent Sigur Rós fans into a frenzy of reignited passion. Not only was there advance news of the band’s first studio album since 2013 – due in the autumn of 2022 – but the return of their keyboard player Kjartan Sveinsson after an absence of ten years, to rejoin lead singer/guitarist Jónsi and bassist Georg Holm. News was subsequently confirmed of the band’s first live dates in five years, starting on April 30th in Mexico and winding its way across the US and Canada to end in New York on June 18th. With Kjartan back in the band, says Jónsi, “It’s really normal. It doesn’t feel that long apart at all.” “It’s bit like nothing happened,” ventures Kjartan. “Maybe because we had worked a lot together before. There is a saying in Icelandic, and in English too, that we have hit the ground running.” Since breaking internationally in 1999 with their uniquely brilliant second album Ágætis byrjun, which won the inaugural US Shortlist Prize for Artistic Achievement in Music, Sigur Rós have been a global sensation, from their six number one albums in Iceland to platinum-selling albums and sell-our tours in all directions. It’s hard to think of another band that so creatively fuses the apparent opposing forces of majesty and intimacy, drawing on ambient and neo-classical strains as much as rock and shoegaze, spearheaded by Jónsi’s haunting falsetto and reverberating guitar (often played with a cello bow). If you believe in psycho-geography, it makes sense that the compact island that Sigur Rós call home is a wild landscape of volcanic rock, fire and ice, with mountains, glaciers and sea in every direction. If the band’s music taps the power within, their creative choices look outward, and upward, not just touring overseas but releasing their own film documentaries, including Route One, filmed on Iceland’s ring road in permanent daylight on the longest day of the year and broadcast live on national TV and YouTube, to a soundtrack created by generative music software. Hollywood, independent film and TV have used their music extensively including the BBC natural history series Planet Earth. And they have created special recordings for The Simpsons and Game Of Thrones (even appearing on screen for the latter) in 2013. They’ve collaborated with Icelandic folk heroes on the stirring orchestrated/choral opera Odin’s Raven Magic (a live version was finally released in 2020 having last been performed in 2004), and with Radiohead for music for Merce Cunningham’s dance piece Split Sides. The beginning of a thrilling new chapter in Sigur Rós’ life follows the departure of drummer Orri Páll Dýrason (in 2018), Jónsi moving to Los Angeles, to continue work on his second solo album (Shiver was released in 2020, and its surprise sequel Obsidian in 2021 in conjunction with a new art installation in New York) whilst expanding his ambient project Liminal, releasing mixtapes and staging live ‘soundbaths’. Sigur Rós, not for the first time, went into hibernation. “It was normal for us to take a break, for two or three years,” explains Georg. “I guess it’s abnormal it being nine years between albums, but things happened. Maybe we would have been further into this project if it wasn’t for Covid, you never know.” Since leaving Sigur Rós’, Kjartan had written film soundtracks and collaborated with other artists whilst running the Sundlaugin studio outside of Iceland’s capital Reykjavik (where the band are recording the new album). But he and Jónsi also decided to collaborate again, free of expectations or deadlines, simply to enjoy the creative process again after all the stress. But when Georg heard they had created, “I thought, I can be part of that,” he says. Jónsi and Kjartan agreed. “Initially, it was nothing to do with Sigur Rós, but with time, it became the obvious way forward,” says Kjartan. “Georg brings so much energy.” As for Kjartan, “It’s great to have him back,” says Jónsi. “He’s such a genius melody-maker.” The template for the new album was, “Wouldn’t it be nice to do something beautiful?” Kjartan recalls. They’re deploying an orchestra for the first time on record since their fifth album, 2008’s Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust, captured during recording sessions at London’s legendary Abbey Road studios. Also present will be the band’ signature sound: “Bold guitar and piano and Georg’s fat bass sounds,” says Kjartan. “Maybe not very rhythmically driven, but more atmospheric. Will there be drums? Possibly not. But everything seems quite open-ended. For example, we recorded a lot of electronics today. In the end, it might be completely different. That’s very Sigur Rós.” The band have not yet decided whether to bring string or brass players on tour with them, but the set list will include new songs aired for the first time and older songs from across their distinguished discography. But first there is an album to finish before tour rehearsals begin. “I’m sure we will pull through,” says Georg, “even if we’re under pressure right now. But it’s fun at the same time. I’m not too worried about the tour either. Five minutes before we walk on stage for the first show, I know it will be, ‘Let’s go!’” ends

An evening in concert with Darron Moore puts you ringside, where Darron’s charismatic stage presence and engaging wit takes you on an unforgettable ride through the spirit of music. With a stage presence that appeals to a cross section of music lovers, Darron blends the sounds of Funk, Jazz, Motown, Pop, un-adulterated Soul, and gives it his own special flavor! Darron Moore is currently performing a tribute show to Luther Vandross. It is a very special tribute show featuring Luther Vandross’s best known and greatest hits. The show brings to life the soul-stirring sounds of Luther Vandross’ legendary performances and honors the brilliance and music of one of R&B’s most beloved singers. Darron Moore performs Luther’s greatest hits such as “Dance with My Father,” “Never Too Much,” “A House Is Not a Home,” “Glow of Love,” & more! When ask if he sounds like Luther Vandross, he said, “I don’t try to sound like Luther. I just honor his music.” Enough said. Darron Moore was born on January 16, 1958 in Washington D.C. He grew up in Detroit, Michigan. This talented R&B singer continues to demonstrate his unique ability as a record producer and song stylist capable of interpreting material from literally every part of the musical spectrum. Darron Moore covers songs by The Temptations, Benny Mardonnes, Evelyn Champaign King, Sade, Maroon 5, and even Madonna. From the age of three, the entertainment bug bit Darron Moore. He would enjoy putting on impromptu shows in the family living room and singing on the street corner with his friends. Darron grew in musical maturity. Writing, recording, and performing music, with love as a central lyrical theme, has been at the core of Darron Moore’s work. During his teenage years, Darron Moore began singing with local bands and gaining the kind of on-stage experience that provided a strong foundation for his emergence as a recording and performing artist. Growing up experiencing and being apart of the Motown sound, ‘The Sound of Young America,” Darron Moore has embedded the Spirit of Motown. It reflects in his live performances. Influenced by artists such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Fantastic Four, Lamont Dozier, Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, and other great performers, Darron Moore has developed his own style and unique flavor. Darron Moore has formed and performed with a number of bands, ‘The Sons of Soul’, a band he organized in elementary school, ‘The Exceptions’, which was a High School R&B group which later began a gospel group, and currently, as of 1973, Darron Moore and The 14th Floor. After 1973, Darron Moore started performing as a solo artist. The name of his band was, The 14th Floor. Fourteen musicians made up The 14th Floor. The band consisted of the bass, lead guitar, drummer, two keyboard players, two violinists, a percussionist, Sax, French horn, Trombone, and three background singers. The band has since changed formats over the years. His father, the late visionary, Leroy Moore, managed Darron. Leroy Moore named the band. Leroy Moore had an office in the prominent Detroit Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit on the 14th Floor. At that time, many high profile Detroit Companies had offices on the 14th Floor. If you needed something, you went UP to the 14th Floor to make it happen…, even if you were on the 40th floor! Leroy Moore believed that his band, Darron Moore and the 14th Floor, like the companies on the 14th floor of the Detroit Renaissance Center, should be high profile and upscale. Therefore, at his insistence, Darron Moore and the 14th Floor has always remained to this present day, one of the most entertaining, best dressed, and most celebrated bands in Detroit. Darron Moore and The 14th Floor Discography include Love’s Flight, Love’s Flight Reflections, Darron Moore and The 14th Floor Live!, and A Real Christmas, Forever, For Always, For Luther, Undercover, and Night On The Town. Darron Moore continues to grow. He is an executive record producer and songwriter with his own independent label, Dana Day Records. Moreover, he is now promoting and organizing concerts for public and private events. Known as Detroit’s favorite Son, Darron continues stand high ‘UP ON THE 14TH FLOOR!’

14th Floor Music and Entertainment is a company that provides professional entertainers specializing in music, comedy, and dance for events such as corporate functions, weddings, and private parties They offer a wide selection of entertainers to fit any event, from major and local music performers to DJs The company is based in Atlanta, Georgia, and a branch in Detroit, Michigan Darron Moore is the corporate entertainment specialist who works with 14th Floor Music and Entertainment 678.224.1413 Booking Tips Continued Booking an artist is usually considered a great way for promoters and event planners to make money. After all, if the artist is highly-regarded, they have a built-in customer base, and their fans will show up usually if they know about the show. And if they’re a little more obscure, the artist will be so grateful for the opportunity to showcase their talents that they’ll do a lot of the legwork in bringing people to their show, right? Too often, that’s not the case. In fact, many concert and event promoters actually lose money on artist bookings, and they learn the hard way that securing an artist for an event is only part of the equation. While it’s all well and good to secure the artist, there are a lot more considerations to take into account in order to determine whether it ends up being a profitable endeavor for the promoter. With this in mind, let’s take a look at some of the other factors that can be the difference between a positive experience with booking an artist and a nightmare. Overestimating the Artist’s Popularity When booking an artist, it’s easy to be drawn in by the amount of hype or buzz an artist has. When considering acts to book, some promoters simply do a quick straw poll of their friends and contacts to determine if they would see the show, but if you’re looking for a thousand or more people to attend, asking a handful of people isn’t going to give you an accurate projection of the turnout. Other promoters use things like the number of Spotify streams an artist gets as a barometer of that artist’s popularity, and they assume that just because a good amount of people listen to that artist, they can expect a similarly high turnout to their show. But there’s more to an artist’s popularity than the number of people listening to their music. After all, listening to a song is a mostly-passive activity: all the audience has to do is press “Play” and sit back and listen. On the other hand, actually attending a concert is an active endeavor: people have to pay money for the show, make plans to get there, and plan their entire evening around one activity. And it’s the difference between those types of activities that can determine whether or not people pay the price of admission. Finally, you should always take into account where an artist’s fanbase is located. Booking the Arctic Monkeys for an event in London is a smart move; booking them in Omaha is not. Underestimating the Artist’s Rider The most famous example of an artist’s rider is probably Van Halen’s “no brown M&M’s” stipulation. While it might seem like another example of a celebrity ego gone wild, there was actually a good reason for it: if a promoter hadn’t read the contract in enough detail to notice that request (or saw it and decided to ignore it anyway), then there was a good chance that they also didn’t see or chose to ignore the other stipulations in the rider (like the proper stage setup) that were there to ensure the band’s safety. Nearly every touring artist has a rider in their performing contract that sets terms for the equipment, setup and amenities they require. Depending on the artist, however, the specifics of the rider can vary, and not paying close attention to detail can cost promoters far more than they expected. Promoters should always take a careful look at an artist’s rider before agreeing to the terms of the contract. Lazy Accounting In addition to securing the artist and making sure people attend the show, promoters are also responsible for setting the ticket price. Like everything else in the realm of artist bookings, this can go bad fast if it’s not done correctly and responsibly. It’s a difficult balancing act: set the prices too low, and the promoter won’t make enough money to cover the costs; set them too high, and people won’t bother to pay for a ticket. When setting the ticket price, a lot of promoters make the mistake of dividing the cost of the artist and the venue by the expected number of people who will attend. So if the venue and artist cost $100,000 and the capacity for the venue is 5,000 people, the promoter thinks “I can charge $20 per ticket in order to break even, so I’ll charge $40 and make a profit.” And if it were that simple, we wouldn’t be talking about it. What this “math” (if you want to call it that) fails to take into account is, well, a laundry list of things. For one, the cost of the artist and the venue aren’t the only costs associated with putting on an event. If the artist’s rider adds $50,000 worth of equipment and other expenses to the bill, then the break-even number is now $30 per ticket. Well, still making a profit, right? Sure- assuming the place is filled to capacity. If only 4,000 people show up, the promoter loses $10,000 after paying all the expenses. And though it might be tempting to say “Next time, I’ll charge $60 per ticket just to be sure,” keep in mind that the higher that price gets, the less people are going to be willing to pay it. So when figuring out the ticket cost, promoters should first determine exactly how much they’ll need to spend on everything: the artist’s appearance fee, the items in their rider, the venue, security, et cetera. They should also confirm (and double-confirm) the artist’s fee before the contract is signed, and they should also look at the average percentage of attendance capacity the artist actually brings in. If an artist consistently only sells enough tickets to meet 75% of a venue’s capacity, the promoter should adjust the ticket price to reflect that. There are enough variables in the booking industry to keep promoters on their toes. But by using the data available to them and being thorough in their research, they can minimize the number of unknowns and focus on what they do best: putting on a great show.

In August 2013, Kerch disagreed with more specialized genre ascribed to the band, stating that "We're just a rock 'n' roll band" while conceding that each album did have a markedly different rock sound to them by design. The nu metal label has been applied to the band's earlier work by journalists on occasion, though the band disputes that term as well. The band's first album, Leave a Whisper , largely stayed away from having any guitar solos, something then-guitarist Todd felt was undesirable due to the popularity of nu metal at the time of recording album, though he felt the band was never particularly part of the genre's movement. With nu metal falling out of popularity by the mid-2000s, they began adding guitar solos more prominently to their music, starting with their next album, Us and Them . Us and Them has also been described as less "grungy" than its predecessor with "more twisted, progressive song structures". The Sound of Madness went in different musical and lyrical directions as compared to the band's previous two albums. Barry Kerch noted that lineup changes and volatility in the band members' lives produced a darker and angrier sound. The album's lead single, "Devour", is an anti-war anthem, but The Sound of Madness also contains "If You Only Knew", the band's first love ballad. Amaryllis has been noted to have a more positive, "anthemic" bent. Writing for Loudwire , Anne Erickson described the album's sound as "aggressive-yet-cathartic." Their fifth studio album, Threat to Survival , was described as the band's most "pop-oriented" album, with the single "State of My Head" being referred to as "a slick amalgam of electro-pop and vintage alt-rock with a catchy as hell though extremely well-worn chorus." The 2018 follow-up, Attention Attention , is a concept album that begins with the narrator in a "dark, negative place" and gradually emerging from that over the course of the track listing. Both Threat to Survival and Attention Attention have been described as having more of a pop rock sound but have also been described as hard rock.
